We passed this incredibly, huge Moreton Bay Fig tree on our way to the King's Park entrance and it reminded me of the amazing images that Shaun Tan created to illustrate Gary Crew's story - Memorial. I love the story and use it nearly every year, in my teaching, around the time of Anzac Day or Remembrance Day. Picture story books are such a powerful teaching springboard.
The first photos with my new camera, so much to learn, but I was pleasantly surprised with some of the results.
We had perfect weather for our first full day in Perth. We wandered around King's Park and enjoyed the beautiful botanic garden's full of natives and wild flowers. It has inspired me to sprinkle packets of seeds in my garden to see what eventuates instead of carefully planting bought pots of plants. This incredibly colourful little creature (around 1.5 centimeters in length) looks like something you might find under the sea not on the leaves of an eucalyptus tree. The small caterpillars were voracious, leaving very little of the leaves where they found. Thank goodness they weren't any bigger!
These wind borne seed fairies have been caught in a web. They are almost luminescent in the morning light. This very fat Orb Weaving spider was devouring it's prey in the middle of its web, which is typical behaviour according to the Australian Museum website (http://australianmuseum.net.au/Garden-Orb-Weaving-Spiders). I love spending time on my Veranda, looking out over the garden. It has changed sooo much in the seven years that we have been here. The only tree that existed when we came is the gum tree that you can see with the blue-grey leaves.
This little dragon fly flew inside and was trapped in the window for a couple of hours. When I released it it needed some time to recover so I was able to photograph it without it flying off straight away. Superb creatures. This seems suitable as it is the year of the dragon in china.
