This is Geoff's favourite iris because it is so dark. It is one of the first to flower in the Spring. I was really pleased when I found a Tamarisk tree to plant in Camelot Gardens because it reminded me of a very old and lovely tree we had in our farm garden at Athlone. Every year, though it seemed quite frail, the branches would burst with long boughs of pink feathery flowers just before the leaves.
However when I did a quick Google Search, to check the spelling of the name, I found that it is an invasive species and a weed in much of Australia. Maybe it depends on where it is planted because the one in Athlone certainly didn't spread or propogate in the 20 years we were there or the 30 years before we got there. The common name is salt cedar and I think there must be different varieties of it, but a little research has certainly changed my enthusiasm for the Tamarisk. The Viburnums have been magnificent this year. Many plants in the garden have done so much better due to the extra rain in summer
My two standard wisterias are stunning when they flower and as the petals drop, the ground becomes almost luminescent. |
